🛠️ Installation Tips
-
Sprague Orientation: Pay close attention to the direction of the Sprague carrier during installation. Installing it backward will result in the AWD being permanently locked or failing to engage at all.
-
Roller Retention: Use a small amount of thick assembly grease to hold the rollers and springs in place on the hub while sliding it into the ring gear. This prevents a roller from falling out and jamming the differential.
-
Armature Plate Inspection: Always inspect your Armature Plate (the thin metal disc) for warping or "scalloping." If the plate is bent, even a brand-new hub won't engage properly because the magnet cannot pull it flat.
-
Torque Sequence: When bolting the differential case halves back together, tighten the bolts in a criss-cross pattern. Uneven tightening can lead to case warpage and internal binding of the new hub.
-
Flush the Case: Before installing the new assembly, spray the inside of the differential housing with brake cleaner to remove all metal shavings from the previous failure. Residual metal bits will quickly destroy the new bearings and seals.
🔍 Troubleshooting Guide
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
| AWD Slipping Under Load | Cracked hub or worn rollers. | Under high torque, a cracked hub expands, allowing the rollers to slip. Replace the hub assembly to restore mechanical lock-up. |
| Front End "Clunking" | Broken Sprague springs. | If the small springs inside the carrier are broken, the rollers will move inconsistently, causing a loud clunking noise when AWD engages. |
| AWD Won't Engage (Electrical) | Magnet/Coil failure. | Check for 12V at the differential plug when the AWD switch is ON. If power is present but it won't lock, the internal magnetic coil may be dead. |
| AWD Stays Locked (OFF) | Warped armature plate. | If the front wheels stay locked in 4WD while the switch is OFF, the armature plate is likely "magnetized" or physically stuck to the coil. |
| Metal Shavings in Fluid | Hub or bearing disintegration. | If your diff fluid looks like "glitter," the hub is likely shredding. Replace the hub and flush the system immediately to save the ring gear. |
