🛠️ Installation Tips

  • Replace All Seals: Do not reuse old seals. This kit includes new oil/dust seals for a reason—properly seating these is the only way to keep water and grit out of your new brake assembly.

  • Spline Lubrication: Apply a light coat of high-temp waterproof grease to the axle splines before sliding the hub on. This prevents the hub from "welding" itself to the axle over time due to rust.

  • Brake Shoe Prep: Use a piece of fine-grit sandpaper to lightly scuff the surface of the new brake shoes and the inner drum. This "breaks the glaze" and provides better initial stopping power.

  • Spring Tension: Ensure the brake shoe return springs are seated fully in their holes. If they are loose, the brakes will drag and overheat the drum.

  • Verify the Cam Movement: Before putting the cover on, rotate the brake cam by hand to ensure the shoes expand and retract smoothly without sticking.

Issue Possible Cause Solution
Brakes Not Releasing Rusted or dry brake cam/pivot. Remove the brake cam, clean off any corrosion, apply fresh grease, and reinstall. Check that the return spring is strong.
Grinding Noise Sand or gravel inside the drum. This usually means a seal was installed incorrectly or is worn. Clean the drum interior and check that the seals are flush.
Weak Braking Power Oil or grease on the shoes. If any grease from the splines or seals gets on the shoe lining, the brakes will slip. Clean with Brake Cleaner immediately.
Hub Has "Play" (Wobble) Loose axle nut. Ensure the castle nut is tightened to the manufacturer's torque spec and secured with a new cotter pin.
Brake Lever Won't Move Seized brake cable. If the hub and shoes are new, the problem is likely a seized cable. Disconnect the cable and see if it moves freely.
