🛠️ Installation Tips
-
Check for "Blueing": Before installing the new plate, inspect your old steel plates. If they have blue spots (heat damage), they are warped. Replacing the pressure plate without replacing warped steels will cause the new plate to wear unevenly and slip.
-
The "Cross" Pattern: When tightening the clutch spring bolts against the new pressure plate, tighten them in a star or criss-cross pattern. Never tighten one bolt all the way down while the others are loose, as this can crack the aluminum pressure plate or snap a spring post.
-
Soak Your Fibers: If you are installing new friction plates along with this pressure plate, soak the friction plates in fresh engine oil for at least 2 hours (preferably 24 hours). Installing them "dry" will burn the surface and ruin the new pressure plate on the first ride.
-
Torque Sequence: Use a torque wrench. The clutch spring bolts on a Hayabusa usually require approximately $10\text{--}12 \text{ N}\cdot\text{m}$ ($7\text{--}9 \text{ lb-ft}$). Over-tightening is the most common cause of snapped clutch basket pillars.
-
Bearing Inspection: While the pressure plate is off, inspect the clutch release bearing (throw-out bearing) in the center. If it feels "notchy" or dry, replace it now to avoid having to pull the clutch cover off again later.
🔍 Troubleshooting Guide
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
| Clutch Slips at High RPM | Weak springs or glazed pressure plate. | If the engine revs up but the bike doesn't accelerate in 5th or 6th gear, the pressure plate isn't clamping hard enough. Check spring free-length. |
| "Chatter" During Take-off | Warped pressure plate or steels. | A warped plate causes uneven contact. Replacing the pressure plate with this factory-spec unit provides a flat surface for smooth engagement. |
| Hard to Find Neutral | Clutch "dragging" / not fully releasing. | This can be caused by a notched clutch basket or a bent pressure plate. Ensure the pressure plate moves outward evenly when the lever is pulled. |
| Clutch Lever Feels "Spongy" | Air in hydraulic line (Gen 1/2). | The Hayabusa uses a hydraulic clutch. If the lever is soft, bleed the clutch slave cylinder. If the problem persists, the pressure plate may be flexing. |
| Squealing When Cold | Glazed friction material. | If the clutch "moans" when taking off, the mating surface between the friction and the pressure plate has become too smooth/glazed. |
