🛠️ Installation Tips

  • Drain the Tank: Completely drain the fuel tank before removing the old petcock to avoid spills and fire hazards.

  • Vacuum Line Connection: This is a vacuum-operated petcock. It has two ports: one for the fuel line and one for the vacuum line. Ensure the vacuum line from the carburetor is connected to the smaller port, or fuel will not flow in the "ON" or "RES" positions.

  • Inspect the Gasket: Use the new O-ring/gasket provided. Ensure the mounting surface on the gas tank is clean and smooth. Do not overtighten the mounting bolts, as this can crush the gasket and cause leaks.

  • Prime Position: If you have run out of gas or the bike has been sitting, turn the lever to the "PRI" (Prime) position for a few seconds to fill the carburetor bowls before starting.

  • Check Fuel Lines: It is the perfect time to inspect your fuel lines for cracks. Hard or brittle lines should be replaced to ensure a leak-proof seal on the new petcock.

🔍 Troubleshooting Guide

Issue Possible Cause Solution
No Fuel Flow in "ON" Vacuum line disconnected or cracked. The petcock needs engine vacuum to open. Check the vacuum hose connection to the carburetor.
Fuel Leaks from Body Loose mounting bolts or old gasket. Tighten the two mounting bolts evenly. If leaking from the lever, the internal seal may be misaligned.
Fuel Flows in "OFF" GS500 petcocks don't have "OFF". Note: These usually have ON, RES, and PRI. In ON/RES, it should not flow unless the engine is cranking/running.
Engine Stalls/Starves Clogged internal filter screen. Ensure the fuel tank is free of rust. If debris enters the petcock, it will block the flow.
Fuel in Vacuum Line Internal diaphragm failure. If you see gas in the clear vacuum line, the internal diaphragm is torn. The petcock must be replaced.
