🛠️ Installation Tips
-
Seal the Pass-Through: When routing the harness through the handlebar and into the hull, ensure the rubber grommet is seated tightly. Use a small amount of marine-grade silicone around the grommet to prevent water from entering the hull during heavy splashes or capsizing.
-
Dielectric Grease is Non-Negotiable: Saltwater is highly corrosive. Apply a liberal amount of dielectric grease to every pin in the multi-pin connector before plugging it into the main harness inside the hull.
-
Lanyard Post Tension: Test the safety lanyard clip before launching. The button should snap out instantly when the lanyard is pulled. If it feels "sticky," check for any plastic burrs on the post from the manufacturing process.
-
Handlebar Slack: Ensure the wiring harness has a "service loop" (slack) near the bars. If the harness is zip-tied too tightly, the wires can pull out of the switch box when turning the bars to full lock.
-
Clean the Ground: On these older 700-series models, a weak ground is common. While installing the switch, ensure the ground connection point inside the electrical box is clean and free of rust.
🔍 Troubleshooting Guide
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
| Engine Won't Crank | Corroded Start button or unseated Lanyard. | Ensure the clip is fully engaged. If the button feels "crunchy" when pressed, salt crystals have likely destroyed the internal contacts. |
| Engine Won't Shut Off | Shorted Stop button contacts. | Safety Hazard: If the Stop button fails, the internal contacts are likely fused due to moisture. Replace the switch assembly immediately. |
| Intermittent Cutting Out | Weak safety switch spring. | If the engine dies while hitting waves, the kill switch spring may be too weak to hold the lanyard clip steady. This new unit restores proper spring tension. |
| Clicking in Hull but No Crank | Switch is good; Battery/Solenoid is bad. | If you hear the solenoid clicking when you press Start, your switch is working. Check your battery voltage or the starter relay instead. |
| Display/Gauges Misfiring | Poor connection in the switch plug. | A loose or corroded pin in the 4-pin or 6-pin connector can cause the dashboard to flicker or show incorrect data. |
