🛠️ Installation Tips
-
Clean the Axle: Before sliding on the new hubs, use a wire brush to remove rust and old debris from the axle splines.
-
Anti-Seize/Grease: Apply a thin layer of anti-seize lubricant or heavy-duty grease to the axle splines. This prevents the hub from seizing to the axle, making future maintenance much easier.
-
Check Spline Alignment: Align the splines carefully. If the hub doesn't slide on easily, do not force it with a hammer; check for burrs or damage on the axle itself.
-
Torque to Spec: Use a torque wrench to tighten the castle nut to the manufacturer's recommended specifications (typically 100-110 ft-lbs for this model, but verify with your service manual).
-
Always Use New Cotter Pins: Never reuse old, bent cotter pins. Always install new stainless steel cotter pins to ensure the axle nut cannot back off during operation.
Fit for Yamaha ATV as Following:
Big Bear 400 2x4 YFM400 2000 2002-2004
Big Bear 400 4x4 YFM400 2000-2006
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
| Wheel Wobble/Play | Loose axle nut or worn axle bearings. | Check the tightness of the castle nut. If the nut is tight but the wheel still wobbles, your axle bearings may need replacement. |
| Hub Won't Fit on Axle | Damaged axle splines or rust. | Inspect the axle for "mushroomed" or twisted splines. Lightly file down any small burrs. If the axle is twisted, it must be replaced. |
| Clicking/Popping Noise | Loose wheel lugs or worn splines. | Ensure the 4 wheel lug nuts are tightened evenly. If the noise persists, check if the hub splines are stripping due to a loose axle nut. |
| Rust Seizing | Lack of lubrication. | If the hub becomes stuck over time, use a hub puller tool. Always use Anti-Seize during the initial installation to prevent this. |
| Cotter Pin Won't Line Up | Nut not tightened to the hole. | Always tighten the nut further to align the next hole for the cotter pin; never loosen the nut to align it. |
